RAFTING

Rafting

In the state of Uttarakhand, rafting is synonymous with the region of Garhwal. That is where it all started. But over the years, as more and more rafting operators descended on Hrishikesh, making it a congested and over exploited tourist zone, Kumaon's majestic and tempestuous rivers have not attracted the same attention, perhaps on account of it's slightly greater distance from the city.

Rafting

To experience what Hrishikesh was 10 years back, the solitude, the absence of crowds and noise, the level 4+ rapids, the dense forest surrounding the river, pristine virgin beaches on which you pitch your tent with no noisy neighbours around and the sheer joy of having a river virtually to yourself and becoming one with it, you need to hop across to the other side. The road less travelled, or should we say - the river. The grand Kaliganga or MAHAKALI, as it is known locally. And it's quieter sister, the serene SARYU.

Rafting

The Mahakali river runs along the Indo Nepal border and gives you the unique opportunity of tailoring rafting expeditions depending on your penchant for adventure, endurance, level of proficiency and experience and available time. It could be a one day sampler between ghat and pancheshwar or a true 6 day rafting expedition from Jauljibi to Boom, navigating some serious grade 4 and 5 rapids along the way. For beginners, there is the gentler Saryu, no less charming, where you could cut your teeth on grade 2 and 3 rapids, maybe pick up a trout or two along the way to grill by the beach, at night.

Rafting

Rafting is fun, but it's serious business. No room for mistakes. You need the security of experienced guides, experts who know the river and can shield you from any harm. The camp rapid fire team is the only one based in Kumaon which has a certified rafting licence and permit from the Uttarakhand government. We are not occasional visitors from Hrishikesh, we are based here. There is no one on the Mahakali who does not know Raj Garkoti, our rafting master guide and your constant companion on the river. A veteran of over 25 years, Raj knows every eddy on the Kali and with him, you are in the safest pair of hands.
